DaBakers Empowers the Next Generation of Chefs Through Community Partnerships and Volunteer Initiatives

Chicago, ILDaBakers, the commercial division of Franher Bakery, is shaping the future of Chicago’s culinary community through hands-on partnerships with the Unite Here Chicago Hospitality Institute (UHCHI), led by Chef Instructor Victor Martinez, and through meaningful volunteer efforts. DaBakers is on a mission to inspire and support aspiring chefs and bakers across the city.

A Commitment to Culinary Education and Growth

Rooted in tradition and driven by innovation, DaBakers is building new pathways in culinary mentorship. Through strategic collaborations with local institutions like UHCHI and nonprofit organizations, the company provides students with real-world experience, artisan techniques, and access to seasoned professionals.

The invitation from Chef Victor Martinez to bring José Hernández into the classroom was rooted in shared values — a belief in community, tradition, and the power of passing on knowledge. This partnership reflects a genuine commitment to helping students succeed in the kitchen and beyond.

“We believe in building the future by investing in young chefs,” said José Hernández. “At DaBakers, we’re not just baking bread—we’re sharing knowledge, uplifting talent, and giving back to the community that has helped us grow.”

Workshops, Mentorship, and Community Impact

Through the Unite Here Chicago Hospitality Institute, students can access UHCHI’s debt-free Chef de Partie Apprenticeship Program, which offers a no-cost pathway into unionized hospitality careers. During hands-on workshops, DaBakers guides students through the art of fermentation and the craft of baking artisan bread — while emphasizing quality ingredients and traditional methods.

Outside the classroom, DaBakers extends its impact by participating in community events and initiatives that help young chefs experience how food brings people together.

Inspiring the Future of Baking

DaBakers’ involvement with UHCHI and other culinary programs is part of a broader mission to support mentorship, education, and workforce development in the baking industry.

“This is just the beginning,” added Hernández. “We’re committed to building a legacy that goes beyond baking—one that empowers, educates, and elevates the culinary leaders of tomorrow.”
